The most basic type of cylinder liner is a dry type cylinder, or cylinder sleeve that does not come in direct contact with water or coolants. This means that dry cylinder liners need to have high resistance against thermal stress and friction. This is the reason a good dry cylinder liner is made using high-quality cast iron with alloys and manufactured by centrifugal casting. Why use dry sleeve in an engine? To protect and repair the cylinder bore from damage. this is the primary reason for the use of Cylinder liners. Cylinder liners also are used to restore certain bore sizes. Some engines undergo overbore meaning they increase the engine displacement by increasing cylinder diameter. This is done by liner as well. Cylinder sleeves are intended to preserve and protect the engine from extreme pressure, especially with Diesel engines which have substantially higher pressure. Although damage to diesel engine cylinders is much more common, gasoline engines are installed with cylinder liners as well.
